Mario Gomez

Name: Mario Gomez

Position: Mechanic

How long have you worked for Hughson Unified? Almost two years.

What do you like best about your daily duties? I like working on different equipment daily, taking on different challenges and working with people who take pride in their work.

What do you do to help make an impact on students? I make sure school buses and transportation equipment are dependable and in safe operating condition to transport students to and from school and related school activities. I also help the grounds and maintenance team keep their equipment running so it is easier for them to keep a clean, well-maintained and presentable school for the students.

What kind of experience and/or education is important to do your job well? Attending equipment repair training events to keep up with changing technology.

How has the pandemic affected what you do? At first it made a smoother transition because not all equipment was moving and it was easier to do in-depth repairs, but recently it has reduced availability of parts and has increased living costs as well as repair and operation costs tremendously.

How can parents support what you do? By teaching their children good moral values, behavior and respect for school property and staff.

What would surprise people about your job? That not only do I work on school buses, transportation vehicles, maintenance vehicles and grounds equipment, but I also drive school buses when needed to transport students safely to their destination.

What do you do for fun? Spending time with family, going to new places and working on old cars.
